SpareBank 1 Mid-Norway Headquarters, Trondheim, Norway

The owner and users of the building, SpareBank 1 Mid-Norway, had very high energy efficiency ambitions for their new headquarters. They wanted the building to be the most energy efficient office building in Mid-Norway with an annual energy consumption of less than 100 kWh per sqm. The goal would be achieved through well-functioning collaboration between the builder, contractors and experts in Enova, NTNU and SINTEF.

SpareBank 1 had a planning horizon of usage for the 50-80 years. That meant the technical solutions had to be flexible, in case there were changes to the structure and size of the company, or changes to the how the workers were organized. The entire building had to have design and engineering solutions that could suit many different scenarios without requiring full reconstruction of the building.


The builder, architects, contractors, researchers, users and consultants gathered around the same table to find the best solutions for customer’s requirements. By utilizing advanced technical solutions throughout the 20,000 m2 building, with automatic control of temperature, airflow and light, the building achieved an energy consumption of only 80 kWh per squaremeter per year. In 2011, the building received this year's Energy Savings Award of Trondheim Municipality.

Caverion has delivered pipes, ventilation and electrical installations to the building. They worked closely with the client, architects and technical consultants to find solutions that enabled them to reach the energy efficiency target. The building has been given a special form of ventilation system that is relatively untested in Norway. Instead of air blown out from the roof, as it’s done in traditional ventilation systems, all air is blown into the room through vents in the floor. The floor is lined up 50 centimeters, and this cavity is used as a conduit for ventilation, heating, electricity, telecommunications and data. To save energy, heat and ventilation is demand controlled based in the time, human impact and air quality.
